Social media good or evil?

Social media was meant for good, not evil….. but like everything people just can’t help themselves, especially celebrities.

Twitter is one of the largest social media platforms, and although I am not a huge  user, it is popular amongst Celebrities with nearly every big name these days having an account. Twitter allows these celebrities not only to update their fans, promote themselves or other brands, show public support for friends and family but also allows them to show their dark side having public fights or feuds with one another . I guess they say all publicity is good, and maybe this is why they do it in a public form, who really knows….

Here are some examples;

If you wanna check out some more feuds and publics fights;

While these feuds and fights are quite humour to bystanders, it does show the ugly side to social media exemplifying nothing is ever going to be used for its soul purpose. Social media was created as a harmless online interactive tool, but now days it may just add fuel to things such as  the online bullying fire. I came across these while doing some research for another marketing subject and I thought they were quite funny.. but it got me thinking of the negative impact that social media may have on things such as cyber bullying with people being able to hide behind their keyboards.

I think it is ultimately a good tool when used in the right way such as social interact and marketing…….

What are your thoughts on social media?… good or evil?

MJ xx

  1. Hi Maddy! Ultimately, i think it depends on its user. As much good as social media could get (e.g. help in increasing awareness for charity campaigns), it could be used for much harm too (e.g. anorexic quotes, cyber-bullying).

    1. Hi Danson, Yeah i agree.. does depend on the user and their motivations behind using it. It is sad that people do exploit things such as social media to harm others, makes no one out of their reach. Hopefully in the future this won’t be the case.

    Great post Mads! I think the pros of social media outweigh the negatives and therefore can be seen as ultimately an excellent tool for both marketers and the community however the negatives of social media are increasing and need to be dealt with. The motivations to why people are acting in a negative manner is the underlying cause and its terrible to see people use social media in a harmful manner. Check out my post, it goes into a bit more detail about the harm of pro-anorexia sights and the damaging effects it has on people.

    Do you think social media should be regulated to prevent harmful comments/feuds? or it this a matter of freedom of speech?

    1. Some great thoughts Bronte,i like to think social media is used for good… but it is undeniable that there are people who defiantly use social media in a negative and harmful way. I will check out your post, sounds interesting. Regulating social media would be a good idea in theory i think… but would be hard to implement and as i mentioned in my post people just can’t help themselves and im sure they would be find some way around it!. Thanks for your thoughts! Do you think it should be regulated?/ would it work?

      1. Bronte Joseph · ·

        Exactly! Nah I don’t think regulations would work that well… imagine trying to punish every single person who posts something bad! But something definitely needs to be done!! Keep up the good posts mads!

      2. Agreed, would be an endless job! Hopefully something is created soon to combat this growing problem of negative content and bullying online! Thanks for your thoughts Bronte.
